Gujarat restricts convoy facility for CM, deputy CM

In a major administrative move aimed at encouraging fuel conservation and reducing unnecessary expenditure, the Gujarat Government has decided to withdraw official convoy facilities for ministers placed under the “non-category” classification.
The decision follows PM Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to reduce petrol and diesel consumption across the country. Acting on the call, the state administration has begun implementing several austerity measures involving official travel and security arrangements.
Under the revised protocol, only Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi will continue to receive limited convoy facilities. All other ministers will no longer be entitled to official convoys during travel.
Officials said the move is intended to promote simplicity in governance, reduce fuel use, and minimise inconvenience caused to the public by long vehicle processions and traffic restrictions during VIP movement.
The Chief Minister has also decided to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy. Sources said his convoy strength has been cut down significantly, and he will also avoid accepting additional district-level escort vehicles during official visits.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister has reportedly scaled down his convoy arrangement and cancelled a planned visit to the United States as part of the broader effort to support fuel-saving initiatives.
