Delhi High Court seeks response on Tahir Hussain’s bail plea in UAPA case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought a response from authorities on the bail plea filed by former councillor Tahir Hussain in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), marking another procedural step in the long-running legal proceedings related to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.
The court’s direction comes as Hussain continues to challenge his prolonged judicial custody in connection with multiple serious charges arising from the riots, including allegations of conspiracy, rioting, and murder.
The case is part of the larger conspiracy probe linked to the 2020 violence in northeast Delhi, which left several people dead and caused widespread damage to property.
Hussain has been in custody since March 2020 and has repeatedly moved bail applications before various courts, arguing for relief on grounds of prolonged incarceration and delay in trial proceedings. However, courts have consistently examined the matter in light of the seriousness of allegations and statutory restrictions under the UAPA.
Earlier proceedings in the case have also seen the Delhi Police opposing bail pleas, citing concerns over witness safety and the gravity of charges, while maintaining that there is prima facie material against the accused.
The High Court has now directed the concerned authorities to file their response, after which the matter will be taken up for further hearing.
The case remains one of the key ongoing legal proceedings arising from the February 2020 riots, in which investigations and multiple trials are still underway.
