NSUI protest admission, exam concerns; allege forcible removal from Jamia
Students affiliated with the NSUI unit of Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday held a protest over alleged irregularities in the admission process and examination results, following which the student organisation claimed that protesters were forcibly removed from the campus during their indefinite sit-in.
The protest was being held at the Central Canteen, with students demanding transparency in examination results, a review of admissions and accountability for alleged irregularities in the admission process, according to a National Students' Union of India (NSUI) statement released on Wednesday.
The university, however, had previously rejected similar allegations raised by Students' Federation of India (SFI) as "baseless", maintaining that its admission process is "extremely transparent" and cannot be manipulated.
"The admission process is extremely transparent, and it is not possible to manipulate," a university official had said while responding to allegations regarding spot admissions and implementation of reservation policies raised by the Jamia unit of SFI.
The NSUI strongly condemned the alleged forcible removal of protesting students, claiming that the action took place despite the presence of the proctorial team, the dean of students' welfare and several professors who had earlier participated in discussions between students and the administration.
According to the NSUI, its representatives had engaged in dialogue with the university authorities over the students' concerns, but the administration neither accepted their demands nor provided any concrete assurance or written commitment.
The NSUI demanded the immediate release of complete scorecards so that students could access their marks and understand the basis on which results were prepared.
It also sought admission for all genuinely affected and deserving students and a thorough review of the admission process. The organisation said any admissions found to have been secured through "unfair influence" should be examined and cancelled wherever irregularities are established while ensuring merit and transparency.
The student body further demanded accountability for alleged irregularities in the examination and admission processes and called for the resignation of the controller of examinations.
The SFI has also alleged irregularities in Jamia's admission process, particularly regarding spot admissions and reservation policies, claiming that programme-wise vacant seats, waiting lists and criteria for filling seats were not publicly disclosed.
It had also questioned the alleged cancellation of Jammu and Kashmir reservation and sought clarity on its implications for affected applicants.
The NSUI said it would continue to pursue the students' demands through democratic and legitimate means and urged the university administration to engage with students in good faith and provide clear commitments in writing.
