CM Suvendu to remain Nandigram voter

Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari would remain a voter in the Nandigram Assembly constituency while continuing as the MLA for the Bhawanipore seat in Kolkata, he said on Sunday at a gathering in Nandigram, where saffron candidate Hansirani Rath won by a record-breaking margin in the just-held Assembly elections. “I will remain a voter at Nandigram till the last breath of my life and at the same time continue as the MLA of Bhawanipore,” Adhikari said on Sunday before announcing a range of projects for the region. “I will continue to be one of you and one among you throughout my life,” he said.
Adhikari rose to prominence in State politics from Nandigram during the land movement against the Left Government led by then-opposition leader Mamata Banerjee.
Subsequently, he quit the Trinamool Congress in 2021. He contested from Nandigram seat on BJP ticket and defeated Mamata Banerjee, who was the sitting Chief Minister, to become the Opposition Leader of the State. In the 2026 Assembly elections, he contested from Nandigram and Bhawanipore, winning both the seats. He retained Bhawanipore, where once again he defeated Mamata Banerjee. Subsequently, he left the Nandigram seat, from which Hansirani Rath contested on the BJP ticket.
Saying the new MLA would work “as the servant of the people of Nandigram,” Adhikari said he had many projects to deliver. “The coastal road connecting Nandigram to Odisha, improving the super-specialty hospital here, providing G-RAMG jobs,” etc would be among his priorities, he said.
Asking party men to remain grounded and avoid arrogance, Adhikari said, “winning makes you more responsible, and so you should be well behaved and not arrogant so that later on no one can tell us that we have misbehaved with people and acquired big properties,” Adhikari said while promising “big gifts” for Nandigram and the entire East Midnapore district in which the Assembly seat falls.
The Chief Minister promised to speed up the railway project at Nandigram, along with constructing a bridge over the Haldi River to connect the town with the industrial belt of Haldia.
