Career opportunities in India

Follow your heart... A career deserves careful thought, yet the most fulfilling path is often where passion and profession meet
When young people ask me how to build a successful career, I offer them a few simple mantras. Careers are not built merely by securing a job; they are shaped by vision, purpose and the willingness to grow with the times.
The first mantra is to choose your career in the larger context of today's Bharat and its place in the world. India is not merely a nation-state; it is a civilisation with an extraordinary legacy. For centuries, it was one of the world's leading economic powers, contributing between one-fourth and two-fifths of global GDP until the early nineteenth century. Today, India is once again on a remarkable rise. It is expected to become the world's third-largest economy before the end of this decade and remains the largest and most vibrant democracy on Earth. Our national aspiration, as given to us by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is clear: Viksit Bharat, a developed India by 2047. While generations are commonly identified by letters such as Gen X or Gen Z, I prefer to call today’s youth the Gen VB, the Viksit Bharat Generation. You are the generation that will write India's growth story and shape India’s next chapter. Do not merely look for a career; build one that helps build India.
My second mantra is simple: Follow your heart. Every day, we make choices, but a few decisions, such as choosing a profession or a life partner, shape the course of our lives. A career deserves careful thought, yet the most fulfilling path is often where passion and profession meet. When work becomes an expression of your passion, work-life balance ceases to be a struggle. When you look back at your life, following your heart appears to be far more rewarding than chasing recognition, money or fame.
India today offers an unprecedented range of career opportunities. Alongside traditional professions such as the civil services, defence, engineering and medicine, entirely new avenues have emerged in entrepreneurship, investment banking, data science, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cyber security and many other fields. Rapid technological advancement, digital transformation, and governance reforms have created an ecosystem in which talent can flourish across disciplines.
Among these opportunities, the civil services continue to occupy a place of distinction because they provide the privilege of serving the nation directly through governance and public administration. From my own experience in the Indian Foreign Service, I can say that diplomacy is far more than ceremonial events or official receptions. Diplomacy is the art of advancing national interests while building international friendships. It involves strengthening partnerships, protecting India's interests abroad and assisting members of the Indian diaspora whenever they need support. As India’s global role continues to expand, the opportunities to contribute meaningfully through public service have never been greater.
Entrepreneurship is another area where India’s transformation has been remarkable. Supported by initiatives such as Startup India and Digital India, the country has become the world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem. Indian entrepreneurs are creating innovative solutions in fintech, education, healthcare, climate-resilient agriculture, defence, biotechnology, aviation and space technologies. Manufacturing, in particular, must become a larger driver of India’s economy as we move towards the goal of Viksit Bharat. I would urge you to choose a career and profession which can help us build a strong manufacturing base, reaching 30 per cent of India’s GDP by 2047.
Research and innovation will play an equally critical role in India’s future. Artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, nanotechnology, drones, and cybersecurity are not merely emerging industries; they are shaping the future of economies and national security alike. Programmes such as Make in India, Skill India and the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme are creating new possibilities for young Indians across technology, manufacturing, research, academia and innovation. The coming decades will reward those who combine knowledge with creativity and the courage to solve real-world problems.
My third mantra is this: Securing entry into a profession, however, is only the beginning. The world is changing at an extraordinary pace, and every profession is being transformed by technology. Your choice may open the first door, but continuous learning will take you to the next step on the ladder of higher goals. Those who stop upgrading their skills will eventually be replaced by those with better skills, regardless of how successful they once were. Lifelong skilling is no longer an advantage; it is a necessity.
Finally, let me share a piece of advice that I often gave my son during his student years. To achieve anything meaningful in life, keep your body fit and exercise regularly. To keep your mind calm and focused, practise meditation. A strong body gives you the energy to pursue your dreams; a peaceful mind gives you the wisdom to achieve them. I wish every young reader the courage to dream boldly, the discipline to work tirelessly, and the confidence to believe that your success and India’s progress can go hand in hand.
