Bulldozer action at New Market Kolkata sparks tension; Trinamool congress alleges targeted attack

Tensions flared in the city after bulldozers demolished several structures near the iconic New Market Kolkata on Tuesday evening, triggering sharp political reactions.
Visuals from the area showed demolition activity outside the busy marketplace, with security personnel present at the site. The developments come amid heightened political friction following the recent assembly election results in West Bengal.
Leaders of the Trinamool Congress alleged that the action was politically motivated and carried out by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Party MP Derek O'Brien claimed that the demolition was conducted under police presence during what he described as “victory celebrations.”
According to TMC leaders, the incident reflects the “poriborton” (change) promised by the BJP, which they allege is being implemented through aggressive actions on the ground.
Similar tensions were reported from Jiaganj in Murshidabad district, where a statue of Vladimir Lenin was reportedly vandalised by a mob, further escalating concerns over law and order.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement on the demolition drive. Meanwhile, political exchanges have intensified, with both sides trading allegations amid a charged atmosphere in the state.
The situation remains sensitive as security forces continue to monitor developments closely.
