Independence Day 2026: PM pledges free coaching for exam aspirants, Gen Z trust deficit in focus
On the 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced free online coaching for competitive exams on Saturday, Aug 15 aimed at easing the financial and logistical burden on exam aspirants nationwide. "Coaching classes burden the poor and the middle class. We will provide free online coaching for various exams," Modi said, adding that sending a child to a coaching centre should not be seen as a matter of family prestige. He said the government would combine India's digital infrastructure with teaching talent into "a complete network" for free preparation, saving households "thousands of crores of rupees" while keeping students closer to home.
What it could mean for students
More than two lakh students move annually to Kota, Rajasthan alone to prepare for the JEE and NEET entrance exams, often relocating away from home for a year or more, with many more doing the same for coaching hubs in Delhi and Patna. A government-backed online alternative could, in principle, remove the need to relocate altogether which would cut out hostel rent, travel and boarding costs and a lot of miscellaneous expenses of the students while also easing the pressure and cost of managing separate coaching fees on top of regular schooling. The PM also announced AI training for one crore youth and a nationwide sports talent hunt for children aged five to fifteen.
The Gen Z context
The announcement comes weeks after the CJP’s youth-led protests over exam paper leaks and irregularities at the National Testing Agency, which led to Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation on 25 July and left a visible trust deficit between the government and Gen Z. But this initiative looks like a tangible step towards addressing that gap, offering students a concrete cost and access benefit, though the details on its rollout are yet to be announced.
