Assembly to take cognisance of Punjab Police reply in Atishi’s doctored video dispute

The Delhi Assembly Secretariat will take cognisance of the matter in due course amid an ongoing dispute over documents sought from the Punjab Police in connection with a case relating to an allegedly doctored video clip involving Leader of Opposition Atishi.
According to Assembly sources, the Punjab Police have not provided the CFL report, the FIR, and other relevant documents related to the matter. In view of the absence of documents, the Assembly Secretariat will decide on the action in this matter in some time, the source added.
Earlier, the Punjab Police submitted a detailed reply to the Secretariat regarding an FIR registered by the Jalandhar Cyber Crime Police in connection with a video clip circulated on social media.
The office of the Director General of Police of Punjab stated in his communique to the Delhi Assembly that he defended the Jalandhar police, saying the local police of the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate have acted in accordance with the law and the material available on record, upon receipt of a written complaint by a local resident, which duly disclosed the commission of cognisable offences.
“The jurisdictional police officer is duty-bound to register an FIR if the information/allegations furnished before him disclose the commission of any cognisable offence,” the DGP said in his written reply to the Delhi Assembly. In its response, the DGP office stated that the case originated from a written complaint received on January 7. The complaint alleged that video clips circulating on the social media platform X carried misleading subtitles falsely attributing derogatory remarks against Sikh Gurus to Atishi. It further noted that the original video of the speech, later uploaded on Atishi's official social media account, did not contain any such remarks, indicating deliberate editing intended to hurt religious sentiments and disturb communal harmony.
Following examination of the complaint and digital material, Jalandhar Cyber Crime Police registered FIR No. 2, dated January 7, 2026, against unknown persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
“Additionally, as investigative accountability of police agencies is only to the courts, any attempt to stop these investigations from any other corner is going to be violative of the rules of the Assembly itself that require that matters within the domain of the courts not be taken up by the Assembly,” the reply said.
