Assam Rifles seizes heroin worth Rs 1.87 crore near Myanmar border
Assam Rifles personnel seized heroin worth more than Rs 1.87 crore from Champhai district near the India-Myanmar border, an official said on Sunday, August 30.
Acting on specific intelligence about the movement of narcotics, Assam Rifles troops laid an ambush along the Tiau river in the Vangkai area of Zokhawthar in Champhai district on Saturday, the force's spokesperson said.
During the operation, the troops spotted a woman crossing the river with a green polybag. She placed the bag on the riverbank and signalled to another person waiting nearby on a scooter, the official said.
The two fled after noticing the approaching security personnel. While the woman escaped towards Myanmar, the other person fled on the scooter, leaving the bag behind, she said.
A search of the abandoned bag led to the recovery of 250.21 grams of heroin, estimated to be worth more than Rs 1.87 crore, the official said.
The seized contraband was subsequently handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further investigation and legal proceedings, she added.
