Assam Rifles, DRI seize poppy seeds worth Rs 1.31 cr

In a major breakthrough against trans-border smuggling and drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized a massive consignment of poppy seeds valued at Rs 1.31 crore in Assam’s Cachar district.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband, the joint team intercepted a Tata truck on the Silchar Bypass Road late on Saturday evening.
Upon searching the vehicle, security personnel recovered 8,764 kg of high-grade poppy seeds smuggled into the region. Two residents of Silchar have been apprehended in connection with the seizure. The security forces also confiscated the truck and two mobile handsets from their possession.
“The operation is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to combat contraband trafficking in the Northeast. Assam Rifles and the DRI remain committed to disrupting and dismantling these illicit networks,” the release said.
The apprehended individuals, along with the seized poppy seeds and vehicle, have been handed over to the DRI for further investigation and legal proceedings to trace the forward and backward linkages of the smuggling network.
