Delegation of Jat leaders meets Kejriwal

Tuesday, 14 January 2025 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Jat community remains a key political force in Delhi, with both BJP and AAP vying for their support. A delegation of Jat leaders met AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal, following the party's push to include them in the OBC category, while BJP has fielded Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma to woo rural voters. The battle for Jat votes intensifies ahead of the upcoming elections.

At the meeting with community leaders, Kejriwal accused the BJP of "betraying" the Jats of Delhi over the issue of reservation, asking the party when they will be included in the Centre's list for the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

There are around 8 percent jat voters spread in rural areas bordering Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh and their prominence has been diluted as these regions are transformed into urban suburbs. The Jat community, once a dominant political force in Delhi, has seen its influence wane over time due to urbanisation, demographic shifts, and changing political dynamics.

In a press conference, AAP Convenor stated, “Today, dozens of Jat leaders came to meet me to express their gratitude for the letter I wrote to the Prime Minister. In the letter, I reminded the Prime Minister of the assurance he gave in 2015 to the Delhi's Jat community. PM Modi had promised that while Delhi's Jat community is included in Delhi’s OBC list, it is not in the central OBC list, and that it would be added to the central list as well.”

"Jats from Rajasthan can get admissions in the Delhi University and its colleges, jobs in the AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and all the central government organisations but not the Jats of Delhi," the former chief minister said.

“The top two leaders of the country including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had promised the Jat community of Delhi that they will be given OBC reservation at the central level but the promise remains unfulfilled,” he added.

He pointed out that BJP leaders frequently abuse him, and has no issue with their abuses. “They can continue as much as they want. All I ask is one simple question: When will Delhi's Jat community, already included in Delhi’s OBC list, be added to the central OBC list?” he questioned.

The AAP Chief noted that during the election period, the Prime Minister will visit Delhi from time to time, deliver speeches, and address rallies. “I request the Prime Minister to respond to this question: When will the promise he made in 2015 and the assurances given by his Home Minister in 2017, 2019, and 2022 to Delhi's Jat community be fulfilled? When will they include Delhi’s Jat community in the central OBC list?” asked Kejriwal.
