Wisely decide contestants, AICC secretary urges top Congress leaders

Saturday, 13 April 2024 | Abhi Singhal | New Delhi

Even as the Congress is at `discussion’ stage regarding naming its three party candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, AICC Secretary Jai Kishan has urged the top Congress leaders, including former chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to decide ‘wisely’ the contestants who will be backed by the alliance partner AAP as per the INDIA Bloc tie-up agreement.

Of the seven Lok Sabha seats in national Capital, currently held by BJP, four will be contested by AAP and three by Congress nominees — the Chandni Chowk, North-West and North East Parliamentary constituencies. AAP has already fielded its candidates from New Delhi, South Delhi, West Delhi and East Delhi.

“You people know very well about my political life, loyalty and honesty. From time to time, I staged dharnas, demonstrations, got lathi charged, struggled and even went to jail for the sake of party. I continue to enjoy the support and blessings of millions of Dalits in the national Capital as well across the nation. At this point I would only request the party high command not to believe anyone else except those who stood by the party in all times from past, present and vows to be in future,” Jai Kishan, four time former MLA, wrote in a letter to Sonia, Rahul and other office bearers including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Buttressing his claims over candidature from the North-West Delhi Lok Sabha seat, Jai Kishan touched an emotional chord reminding the party of his unwavering support to the party and hence “not get misguided” by his political enemies who want to ruin his political career. Jai Kishan also asked for valued loyalty and acknowledgement to his contribution to the party.

He stressed on how he keeps spending most of his earnings over the welfare of Dalits to keep intact the Dalit votes for the grand old party. “Lakhs of Dalits of the country are associated with me. Don’t insult them, don’t break their trust,” said the senior Congress leader who served as MLA from Sultanpur Majra  in late Sheila Dikshit government.
