Punjab Government’s ambitious ‘Bill Liayo Inam Pao’ scheme has proven to be a resounding success, with 3,592 winners receiving prizes worth a total of Rs 2,11,42,495 for uploading their purchase bills on the ‘Mera Bill’ app. Launched in September 2023, this initiative aims to foster tax compliance by rewarding citizens who actively engage in transparent tax practices.
Finance, Planning, Excise, and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Sunday praised the scheme’s transformative impact, revealing that it has led to the uploading of 1,27,509 bills by consumers. Of this, Rs 1,59,93,965 in prizes have already been distributed to 2,752 winners, with another 247 winners receiving Rs 15,02,010 for November 2024. The scheme has not only incentivized responsible tax behaviour but has also uncovered discrepancies in the tax system.
Cheema emphasized that the government’s drive for transparency and fairness is evident in the imposition of a fine amounting to Rs 8,21,87,862 on 749 bills found with discrepancies. This reinforced the government's commitment to tax compliance and highlighted its proactive stance on curbing tax evasion. The initiative has proven to be a vital tool in increasing state revenue and promoting accountability in the tax system.
He also noted that the scheme exemplified the government's progressive approach to governance. He reiterated that this successful model aligned with the Punjab Government's broader efforts to enhance revenue generation while ensuring the welfare of citizens.
It is important to note that bills related to petroleum products and B2B transactions are excluded from the scheme.
