The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at AIIMS Bhopal celebrated World Physiotherapy Day on Monday, with a series of awareness initiatives aimed at highlighting the benefits of physiotherapy, particularly in the management and prevention of back pain.

On this occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized the vital role physiotherapy plays in addressing back pain, a common ailment affecting millions. "Back pain can be significantly reduced with the help of physiotherapy, but the key is to adopt preventive measures. However, if the issue arises, physiotherapy should be the first line of treatment, and surgery should not be considered hastily. Studies show that 85% of back pain cases are resolved through physiotherapy, with only 15% requiring surgical intervention. Even in cases where surgery is necessary, physiotherapy accelerates recovery," Prof. Singh said.

Physiotherapist Mayank Chandel discussed the high prevalence of back pain, noting that approximately 20% of the population faces this issue annually. "The causes of back pain can range from heavy lifting, poor posture, prolonged sitting, unhealthy dietary habits, injury, infection, and conditions like osteoporosis," Chandel explained. He urged individuals to seek proper physiotherapy treatment and adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent such problems.

Physiotherapist Brijendra Singh also highlighted how back pain impacts daily life, often leading to decreased productivity and financial loss. He emphasized the importance of ergonomic practices, advising, "Use a chair suited to your height, ensure your back is supported, and maintain a 90-degree angle at the knees. Your desktop should be at eye level to avoid neck strain, and adequate lighting is essential. Additionally, mobile apps that remind you to change posture can be useful in maintaining a healthy routine."

To further spread awareness, a video on back pain prevention was launched on AIIMS Bhopal's official YouTube channel. The day also featured engaging activities, including puzzles, quizzes, and an exercise competition, creating an interactive atmosphere for the attendees.
