Kalpana Murmu Soren, a newly elected MLA and prominent leader of the JMM, has claimed that her husband, former state Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is suffering ill treatment in jail.
Drawing parallels to the custodial death of tribal rights activist Father Stan Swamy, Kalpana warned that Jharkhand is on the path to becoming like Manipur. She indicated that the recent Lok Sabha election results represent the beginning of retribution for Father Stan Swamy's death in custody.
Kalpana emphasized that Father Stan Swamy's death is a glaring mark against the state of democracy and human rights in India.
In a social media post featuring a picture of the late Father Stan Swamy and former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, she wrote, "This election marks Jharkhand's quest for justice for the unjust custodial death of 84-year-old Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist Father Stan Swamy, a disgrace to India's democracy and human rights."
Despite his advanced age and Parkinson's disease, Father Stan, who had long championed tribal rights, was denied bail and adequate medical care under fabricated terrorism charges by the BJP government. He wasn't even provided a straw to drink water.
Due to worsening health conditions in prison, Father Stan died in custody on July 5, 2021. His death epitomizes the BJP's approach to silencing opposition and tribal voices under the guise of combating terrorism and criminalizing human rights activism.
Kalpana argued that, just as Father Stan was silenced through institutional neglect and injustice, Hemant Soren is now facing similar oppression. She urged every resident of Jharkhand to support Hemant Soren, warning that otherwise, the BJP will continue their efforts to turn Jharkhand into Manipur.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha secured three seats—Dumka, Chaibasa, and Rajmahal.
During Hemant Soren's imprisonment and Shibu Soren's illness, Kalpana took the lead in the party's election campaign. She held numerous public meetings and won the bye-election for the Gandey Assembly, securing her place in the Assembly.
