CM Atishi visits Rangpuri Pahadi after LG shares video

Monday, 23 December 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

After Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena shared a clip of his visit to Rangpuri Pahari, detailing hellish living conditions, where dirty water could be seen filled on streets, drains overflowing, while roads were submerged in the sewage water and residents complaining of huge power bills, Chief Minister Atishi Atishi with senior officials on Sunday visited the area to take stock of the area's civic amenities and pledged swift road restoration and clean-up within a week.

Earlier, taking to X, Saxena shared a video of his visit Rangpuri Pahari in south Delhi and Kapashera in southwest Delhi and said the residents complained about the frequent power cuts and stinking water logged in the alleys and streets.  “The stinking water accumulated in the alleys and streets is not rainwater, but from overflowing sewers. The women narrating their problems are from Delhi, not any other state," Saxena said

The Lieutenant Governor had visited the Rangpuri Pahari in South Delhi and Kapashera in South-West Delhi along with MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri on Saturday after repeated requests from the locals.

After a visit to the Rangpuri Pahadi area, Atishi stated, “I am thankful to LG Sir for attracting our attention to this. If the LG identifies any problem or issue in Delhi, he should inform us, and we will ensure it is resolved. During his visit to New Rohtak Road, the LG pointed out that the road was in a completely broken state.”

Responding to the concerns, AAP supremo and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal thanked Saxena for flagging the shortcomings, saying the Delhi government would take steps for improvements. "Earlier, the lieutenant governor had cited the bad condition of the Nangloi-Mundka Road. The road has been constructed and Chief Minister Atishi will soon inaugurate it. I urge the lieutenant governor to tell us about the shortcomings and we will correct them," Kejriwal said in a press conference.

In the post, he said it was extremely disappointing and distressing to witness once again the helplessness and pathetic life conditions of lakhs of people of the national capital. He had referred to the local women, citing their problems of living in the area, with streets lined by overflowing sewers and lack of basic facilities.

The video was from his visit to the Rangpuri Pahari area in South Delhi on Saturday, where people could also be seen sharing their problems related to basic amenities, including lack of potable water supply, repeated power cuts, despite their claims of getting inflated bills.

Saxena also urged the former Chief Minister, and the current Chief Minister Atishi. along with the  cabinet ministers concerned of the Delhi government to visit these areas and see the hellish conditions themselves.

He also asked them to  take immediate steps to improve this pathetic situation.

Saxena, explaining about the entire situation he witnessed in the area, further mentioned that stinking water accumulated on the streets and roads, was not from rain, but from overflowing sewers.

The Lieutenant Governor mentioned that the women seen in the video narrating their problems and heart-wrenching sufferings are from Delhi, not from any other state or country.

He further mentioned that similar conditions were seen earlier in various areas like Burari, Kiradi, Kalandar Colony, Sangam Vihar, Mundka and Gokulpuri, where people were living in pitiable conditions.

He said that there  is no drainage system, due to which the narrow lanes are constantly filled with silt and dirty water, while there is hardly any trace of roads.

According to Lieutenant Governor, locals told him that electricity supply is extremely erratic in the area, while there is an acute shortage of drinking water, forcing the women to carry water in buckets from the tanker that comes once in 7-8 days.

He also said that he witnessed heaps of garbage on the roads and complete lack of cleanliness.

Saxena said that he has assured the people that the cleanliness drive will begin in a day, while he will personally monitor the progress of these efforts to ensure that the residents get at least the basic amenities for a quality life.

Saxena had also given suggestions to officials of agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), to improve the situation.

The BJP and the Congress slammed the AAP government saying Delhi has become a garbage city in the Kejriwal’s rule.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva has stated that Delhi is in disarray. Whether it is Sunder Nagri in Northeast Delhi, Rangpuri in Southwest Delhi, Goela Dairy in West Delhi, Trilokpuri in East Delhi, or Bhalswa in North Delhi and Chhatarpur in South Delhi, residents of slum areas and unauthorized colonies are compelled to live in deplorable conditions.

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said that the terrible deterioration of the Capital, like broken sewer pipes, broken roads, garbage dumps, the soaring three garbage mountains, polluted air and water, which the Delhi Congress has been pointing out for the past several years but went unheeded, was seriously acknowledged by Lt. Governor V.K.Saxena after visiting some colonies like Rangpuri Pahari, Kapsera etc. and he was shocked to find the terrible  living conditions of the people, amidst filth and squalor. He said that  though the LG’s visit might have been an election propaganda for the BJP, it opened his eyes to the pathetic condition of the colonies and how the Kejriwal Government had reduced the city into a huge garbage bowl, after grandly promising to make Delhi like “London, Paris and New York”.

BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said for the last two years, the  Lt Governor has been trying to awaken the Delhi Government but today when the time of examination has come, the Atishi reached Rangpuri hill to pretend innocence.
