Goods train derails at Chandil Railway Station, rail traffic disrupted

Tuesday, 01 October 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a rail mishap, the rear engine of a goods train traveling towards Chandil Railway Station derailed near the number one railway gate in Chandil Bazar, under the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway, on Monday afternoon. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported in the accident so far.

The accident occurred near the railway gate, resulting in significant damage to the rail track. The derailment has caused a major disruption in rail traffic along the affected route. The goods train was carrying a heavy load of iron plates when the rear engine went off the tracks, damaging the railway lines in the vicinity of the gate crossing.

Local authorities have confirmed that no casualties have been reported at this time, though the impact on rail infrastructure is substantial. The damaged track has brought rail traffic to a standstill, and it remains unclear how long it will take to restore normal operations. Passengers on other trains and commuters in the area are likely to face delays until the track is repaired.

Despite the severity of the derailment, emergency response teams from the Chakradharpur (CKP) Railway Division had not yet arrived at the scene by the time of this report. Meanwhile, local residents quickly gathered at the site, with many observing the derailment and waiting for rescue teams to arrive.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud screeching sound before noticing the rear engine slipping off the tracks. “It was a sudden noise, and we saw the last part of the train off the rails,” said one local resident. “Luckily, no one was around the tracks at that moment.”

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and efforts are underway to control the gathering crowd. It is expected that rescue and recovery operations will begin as soon as the CKP Railway Division's team reaches the location. The damage to the rail infrastructure is being assessed, and railway officials will be working around the clock to clear the derailed engine and repair the tracks.

“In the meantime, passengers are advised to check with South Eastern Railway for updates on train schedules, as delays and cancellations are expected due to the ongoing situation. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, and further details will be provided as more information becomes available,” said an official of SER.
