The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has once again demonstrated its excellence in medical research, innovation, and healthcare. Recently, a preterm newborn, born two months before the expected date, overcame significant challenges through exemplary medical care and the unwavering dedication of the mother.

Born prematurely at just 30 weeks of pregnancy, in June 2024, the female infant weighed a mere 710 grams, classifying her as an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) newborn.

The delivery was necessitated by high-risk pregnancy complications, including Oligohydramnios (A condition during pregnancy where there is too little amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus) and absence of Doppler flow, which prompted an urgent cesarean section. Under the expert supervision of the Department of Neonatology, the infant was provided intensive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for two months while being nourished exclusively on mother’s milk, supplemented with a calcium tonic to support bone health.

At six months, the infant has shown extraordinary progress, weighing 4.9 kilograms.

AIIMS Bhopal ED Prof Ajai Singh highlighted the significance of this achievement and said: “This case exemplifies the synergy of advanced medical care, maternal resilience, and the unparalleled benefits of mother’s milk.

At AIIMS Bhopal, we remain committed to provide the highest standards of care for high-risk newborns and supporting families through every challenge. This success story underlines the critical role of comprehensive NICU care, the dedication of NICU nurses, and the life-sustaining nourishment provided by mother’s milk.”
