The Uttar Pradesh government is making efforts to protect and care for destitute cows in the state.

The Urban Development department recently conducted a special three-day campaign, rescuing 7,857 cows across various urban areas from October 8 to 10. These cows were relocated to Kanha Gaushala and other animal shelters to ensure their safety and well-being.

The campaign achieved substantial results, with 2,132 cows rescued on the first day, 2,718 on the second, and 3,007 on the third. This initiative not only supported the welfare of stray animals, but also contributed to urban cleanliness and road safety by removing animals that pose traffic risks.

The campaign was conducted at three levels. Municipal corporations rescued 431 cows on the first day, 615 on the second, and 625 on the third.

Similarly, municipal councils saved 760 cows on the first day, 781 on the second and 907 on the third day. Nagar panchayats rescued 941 cows on the first day, 1,322 on the second and 1,475 on the third.

So far, 1,40,320 cows have been sheltered in Kanha Gaushalas and animal shelters through similar efforts.

Expressing satisfaction with the campaign’s success, Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Amrit Abhijat said that the initiative not only contributes to urban cleanliness and safety, but also plays a key role in animal protection. He confirmed that such efforts would continue.

The coordinated efforts of the municipal corporations, councils, and panchayats were crucial to this achievement. The department also reported earning an income of Rs 11,13,057 through cattle-catching initiatives between April and September this year. Urban Body Director Anuj Kumar Jha has instructed all local bodies to take further action in protecting stray animals within their jurisdictions.
