A day after the discovery of a two-day-old child near the railway tracks in the Bagh Umrao Dulha area of the state capital, the Aishbagh police on Thursday arrested three persons, including two women and a doctor, for their involvement in the incident.
Meanwhile, the newborn breathed her last at the Kamala Nehru Center at the Hamidia Hospital, where she had been sent for treatment by the police after passersby discovered her inside a sack on Wednesday morning.
The arrests came after police monitoring of CCTV footage from the area led to a woman who works as a nurse. Camera images from the vicinity showed her carrying the sack containing the infant.
The questioning of the woman uncovered a spine-chilling plot, which culminated in the arrests of a doctor and the mother of a 14-year-old, who had in turn mothered the infant.
Police found that the 14-year-old minor was having an affair with her cousin. Her mother paid money to the accused nurse, Aasma alias Firdaus, to arrange for the delivery and then dump the newborn.
The delivery was carried out by Dr. Surendra Nahar. Later in the day, the police presented the three before the court, from where they were sent to jail. The scooter used to dispose of the newborn has also been confiscated.
The police prepared a roadmap to identify the accused woman. Footage from 40 CCTV cameras was checked to track the woman who dumped the baby girl. The diligence of the police paid off, and the nurse was arrested.
Her confession led to the arrests of the other two. The minor's mother had expected the infant to be stillborn. But when the baby was born alive, she gave Aasma an advance of Rs 60,000 to dump the newborn.
DCP Priyanka Shukla said that the person who had relations with the minor is also a juvenile offender. Both of them have also been made accused in the case; however, the two have not been arrested yet.The accused medical practitioner runs a private clinic in Ashoka Garden. He claims to be the divisional president of the BJP medical cell.
