Resignation over Rape, West Bengal on the burn

Monday, 09 September 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

The Trinamool Congress on Sunday got its first major political shock amid the ongoing statewide movement post rape and murder of a lady doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Hospital, with party Rajya Sabha Member Jawahar Sircar sending his resignation to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a request to take a “viable administrtive step before it is too late.”

The former Indian Administrative Services officer who had raised his voice during the teachers’ recruitment scam too on Sunday said that, it was too much for him not to speak up.

“It is too much for me... I am increasingly disillusioned by the State Government’s reaction to the incident... It looked quite unconcerned about corruption and the increasing strong arm tactics of a section of leaders,” he said adding he was against some corrupt officers and doctors getting good postings.”

“The other day I had gone out (in a citizens’ rally) not only to register my protest but also to gauge the mood of the publ ic... The spontaneity of the participation showed that people are so angry that they will not stop without a proper administrative decision being taken by the Government... I will request the Chief Minister to take action before it is too late... I will request her not take it politically,” Sircar said asking politicians to stay away from the people’s protest rallies on the RG Kar issue.

Lakhs of people thorough out the State have been descending on street in demand of justice for the victim doctor and steps from the administration to stop repetition of similar incidents.

“The public mood is belligerent... The political leaders should not venture near these rallies lest they get assaulted... The rulers must understand this and take visible step or else the communal forces will enter the scene and exploit the situation to suit their purpose,” he said.

On whether he had received any communication from the Chief Minister he said he would not comment as “that is an inside issue.”

While Sircar received prompt support from the protesters, his own party leaders like Kunal Ghosh attacked him for taking a different stand. Another TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharjee said, “instead of standing by the party in time of problems there are some weather birds who are showing their true colours.”

Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury welcomed his decision saying all right thinking politicians should take similar decisions.
