Delhi welcomes Atishi as its youngest Chief Minister

AAP leader Atishi took oath on Saturday as Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister and became the youngest of all three to hold the top office in the national Capital. She also became the 17th woman to hold the post of Chief Minister in independent India.

Along with her, five other ministers - Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and fresh face Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat were also sworn in. The senior AAP leader, however, will have a brief tenure in office as Assembly elections in the national Capital are due in February.

Atishi was administered oath as the eighth Chief Minister of Delhi by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at Raj Niwas. Saxena administered the oath of office and secrecy to Atishi who is now Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister after Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj. Among her new Council of Ministers, Saurabh Bharadwaj was the first to take oath followed by Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain and Mukesh Ahlawat, a new entrant in the Delhi Cabinet.

AAP convener and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, former deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and other party leaders and MLAs were also present on the occasion. Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, BJP MPs, including Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra, and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora also attended the ceremony.

As per the portfolio allocations after LG’s approval, Atishi  has kept herself 13 major portfolios including Public Works Department, Power, Education, Revenue, Finance, Planning, Services and Vigilance department. Bhardwaj has been allocated eight major departments including Urban Development, Irrigation and Flood Control, Health, Industries.

Rai will handle   Development, General Administration, Environment, Forest and Wildlife department. Gahlot will be in charge of Transport, Administrative Reforms, Information & Technology, Home and Women and Child Development. Imran Hussain retains Food & Supply and Election while newly inducted Mukesh Ahlawat will look after Gurudwara Elections, SC & ST, Land & Building, Labour and Employment departments.

Atishi allocated portfolios among the ministers after consultation with the party.

Addressing a press conference, Atishi said it is an “emotional day” for her as Kejriwal will not continue to be the Chief Minister. In her first remarks after taking oath, Atishi hit out at the BJP for hatching a “conspiracy” against her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal and urged the people of the Capital to ensure that the AAP national convenor returns to the top post again after the Assembly polls due early next year.

As the Assembly polls are due early next year, Atishi said the people of the national Capital must ensure that Kejriwal becomes the Chief Minister again so that the services like free electricity and water continue. She accused the BJP of trying to stop the facilities being enjoyed by people under the Kejriwal Government. “I assure you that since Kejriwal has come out of jail now, we will not let any conspiracy of the BJP succeed,” she said.

The most daunting task before Atishi, however, will be to establish healthy relations with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in view of the latter’s approvals required for a variety of governance as well as development work of the Delhi Government. She will also be holding the crucial National Capital Civil Services Authority meeting for Group-A postings, resuming the doorstep delivery of services scheme, approving the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 and the Solar Policy, among others.

South Delhi BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said that the Atishi government should fulfill the promises made by the AAP to the public. “The new Government should give relief to the public by reducing electricity and water bills; property tax should be waived in Delhi rural. Apart from this, The Central Government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme should be implemented in Delhi,” Bidhuri said.
