TMC announces candidates for Bengal Assembly By-elections

Monday, 21 October 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

The Trinamool Congress on Sunday announced its candidates’ list for the November 13 Assembly by-elections to six seats in Bengal.

While Sangita Roy Pradhan has been fielded from Sitai in Cooch Behar district, Jay Prakash Toppo has been given the party ticket from Madarihat in Alipurduar district. Down south Falguni Singhababu and Sujoy Hazra have been fielded from Taldangra, and Medinipur in Bankura and West Midnapore districts. While Sanat Dey will contest from Naihati, Sk Rabiul Islam will fight from Haroa. Both the seats are in  North 24 Parganas.

The bypolls were necessitated due to resignations of sitting MLAs of the six segments following their victory in this year’s Lok Sabha elections.

While former rulers CPI(M) or the Congress were still to announce their candidates’ list Opposition BJP was first to declare its list of contestants on Saturday.

The party has fielded Rahul Lohar and Dipak Kumar Roy from Madarihat and Sitai respectively. Both these seats are in North Bengal. Subhojit Roy has been fielded from Medinipur whereas Ananya Roy Chakraborty will contest from Taldangra seat. Rupak Mitra have been fielded from Naihati, whereas Bimal Das will contest from Haroa.

Out of the six seats the BJP had won only Madarihar seat during the 2021 Assembly elections. Earlier TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that despite the “disinformation campaign resorted to by the Left and other opposition parties in the garb of the doctors’ movement the TMC will win all the six out of six seats in the by-elections.” He also said that “the Left which is the main conspirator behind the movement will end up in the third place once again.”
