School girl gang-raped, bathed in acid in Bengal

Thursday, 17 October 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

The cold horror of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case returned on Wednesday, this time at Krishnagar in Nadia district where a teenage girl was allegedly gang-raped and literally bathed in acid before her body being dumped barely a few hundred metres of the city offices of the District Magistrate and the Superintendant of Police, triggering fresh round of protests.

The incident takes place little more than two months of RG Kar rape and murder of an on-duty lady doctor and within a fortnight of Joynagar rape and murder case of a 10-year-old school girl.

The body of the 18-year-old victim was found inside a Laxmi Puja pandal in the wee hours of Wednesday, family members said adding her face had melted as acid was poured on her apparently to hamper identification. Rahul Basu the boy friend of the girl has been arrested, police said.

“We have lodged an FIR and arrested the alleged boy friend of the victim based upon the complaints of the family members and two other persons have also been detained for questioning,” district SP Amarnath K said adding “investigation is on to discover other information.”

“My granddaughter went missing in the evening of Tuesday and when she did not return even till 10 pm the family went out searching for her … We tried to contact her boyfriend, Rahul several times but found his actions and responses suspicious. … and in the morning some neighbours discovered her body from near a Laxmi Puja  pandal,” the maternal grandfather of the victim said adding she was a student of Class XI.

Meanwhile, even as political opposition gathered outside the Kotwali Police Station and the morgue demanding a CBI investigation into the case, State BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation saying.“A woman Chief Minister who cannot save the lives and honour of women and continuously remains on the denial mode has no business continuing on her post … when this girl was being raped and murdered on Tuesday she was playing Dandia and dancing with her party MPs at Durga Puja Carnival in Kolkata ... she should resign immediately,” Majumdar said.

Drawing a comparison between Roman emperors Nero the Chief Minister Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose said “Nero played the fiddle when Rome was burning … is history repeating itself?”

CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakrabarty said “the repeated incidents of rape and murder despite the ongoing RG Kar movement when the police should be on an ultra high alert mode only shows that the entire police administration of this State has broken down … it is for the police minister Mamata Banerjee to explain.”
