SP Das the personal physician of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee finally came out in the open challenging “various unfounded theories” connecting him with the general corruption  prevailing in the State Health sector that allegedly led to the August 9 rape and murder of a lady doctor inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. “There are people who are unnecessarily linking me to the Healthy Department or any corruption if there be some just because I am the Chief Minister’s personal physician,” Dr Das an orthopaedic surgeon on Wednesday said. When asked as to whether he knew jailed former Principal of RGKMCH Sandip Ghosh he said he knew him but that was just an acquaintance and that there was no personal proximity. “I have seen him off and on in conferences and our relationship was limited to ‘his and hellos’ … we never ventured beyond that … I knew him because he too is an orthopaedic surgeon like me,” Dr Das said adding “the people who are allowing such dirty misinformation against me to float in the market because I am the Chief Minister’s doctor.” On whether he was aware of the corruption in the Health Department or whether he often times gave advice to the Chief Minister on issues related to the health services in the State, he said he was not in the habit of giving unsolicited advices. “I only give advices if she asks me … otherwise I am not required to give such advices as I am not a Government doctor and also there are plenty of senior people to advice the Chief Minister.” Incidentally besides being the Chief Minister Banerjee is the minister in charge of the Health portfolio too. Earlier a number of doctors as also Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari had repeatedly said that Dr Das was at the helm of everything in the Health Department. “The Chief Minister runs the Health Department through Dr Das … he will tell everything once he is interrogated by the CBI after taking him custody… the fountainhead of all the dirty things in the Health m=ministry is this Dr Das,” Adhikari had said. Reacting to his statement Das said that “Suvendu Adhikari is being supplied wrong information about me … I am not acquainted with him but I know his father --- the former Union Minister Sisir Adhikari --- who is a gentleman … he also knows me well.”
