In a gross defiance of the Supreme Court order making government hospitals, schools and police stations out of bounds for the civic volunteers the alleged "half-cops" continued to man the premises of at least three major hospitals of Kolkata, sources said.
Civic volunteers were on Wednesday seen in their usual sky-blue uniform doing duty inside the state-of-art SSKM Hospital, Calcutta Medical College and CN Medical College sources said.
When asked as to whether they were aware of the Apex Court order the Bengal Government’s “men in blue” either ran away or said they were not aware of any order.
A SSKM an alleged civic volunteer was asked as to whether he was aware of the Supreme Court order he replied in the negative before slipping behind the doors of the hospital. At CMC, the oldest medical college in Asia the civic volunteers said they had come to get their payment and find out details of their subsequent posting.
Making a passing reference that appointing civic volunteers was “a nice method of conferring political patronage on totally unverified persons,” the Bench of Chief Justice Chandrachud, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra had on Tuesday directed the State Government to stop deployment of civic volunteers inside hospitals, schools and police stations.
The Court also asked the Government to file an affidavit in the next hearing saying “the affidavit shall also mention the steps taken to ensure that such volunteers do not operate in any event where sensitive establishments such as hospitals and schools may be particularly vulnerable. The affidavit must also state whether they are associated with police stations or investigation of crime.”
