The Government has cleared Nestle of any wrongdoing regarding the added sugar content in its baby products. Responding to a query in Lok Sabha on Friday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had conducted inspections at Nestlé's
manufacturing sites following media reports from a Swiss NGO about added sugar in a wheat-based infant product.
The inspections, carried out in April, confirmed that the sugar levels per serving complied with the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, which align with global standards set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Added sugar per serving was found to be in compliance with the provisions under Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020 in baby products of Nestle, " said Nadda.
The limits specified for sugars in infant food products in the Regulations is at par with the global standards, namely Codex Alimentarius Commission, which takes into account the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) while setting food standards.
On the basis of the media report, suo motu cognisance was taken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) about a report by the Swiss NGO regarding added sugar in wheat-based baby products, said the Minister.
Inspections were conducted on April 29 and 30 at manufacturing sites engaged in production of the infant food product in the country. Based on scrutiny of the product, added sugar per serving was found to be in compliance with the provisions under Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, Nadda added.
