The Indian automotive market has showcased a diverse performance among key players in September, reflecting varying consumer preferences and market conditions.
Talking about the stats, Mahindra & Mahindra reported a notable 24% surge in SUV sales, achieving 51,062 units compared to 41,267 units in the same month last year. The company also saw overall sales, including commercial vehicles (CVs) and three-wheelers, rise 16% year-on-year to 87,839 units. As the festive season approaches, Mahindra is aloso set to launch the much-anticipated Thar RoXX on October 3.
Conversely, JSW MG Motor India experienced an 8% decline in retail sales, with only 4,588 units sold compared to 5,003 units in September 2022. The automaker noted that new energy vehicles (NEVs) accounted for 49% of their total sales, emphasizing a shift in consumer interest amidst market challenges.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a 14% increase in wholesales, reaching 26,847 units, up from 23,590 units last year. The brand’s success is attributed to significant growth in its SUV, MPV, and small car segments, bolstered by strategic operational improvements that reduced waiting periods for popular models.
Hyundai Motor India faced a 10% dip in total sales, down to 64,201 units from 71,641 units in the previous year. Domestic dispatches also fell by 6%, with exports down 25%. The company noted that SUVs now comprise 70% of its overall sales and introduced new models to attract consumers during the festive season. In addition the domestic dispatch of vehicles to dealers saw a 6 per cent dip to 51,101 units last month from 54,241 units in the year-ago period.
Finally, Maruti Suzuki India showcased a slight 2% increase in total sales, reaching 1,84,727 units, up from 1,81,343 units a year prior. Sales of compact cars, including Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S and WagonR, however, declined to 60,480 units as compared to 68,551 units in the year-ago month.
However, domestic passenger vehicle sales declined by 4%, despite growth in utility vehicle sales. Exports showed positive momentum, rising to 27,728 units from 22,511 units last September.
Overall, the fluctuating sales figures reflect a complex landscape in the Indian automotive market, influenced by consumer trends, economic conditions, and the approaching festive season.
