Chhattisgarh Police on Friday arrested three Nigerians from New Delhi and brought them here for allegedly duping a lady doctor of Rs 13.55 lakhs through a fake profile on a matrimonial site.
Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal told The Pioneer that Emmanuel (33), Paulinus (35) and Augustine (49) are in custody. They cheated a Raipur-based woman doctor.
They were living in Delhi although the visa of the first two men had expired.
Last month, one of them posed as a resident of Scotland, Vikas Kumar, and posted a fake profile on the matrimonial site.
The young woman, who was looking for a suitable match, interacted with him via WhatsApp.
The man gradually gained the confidence of the woman and called up some days later saying he had sent some gifts for her.
Another accused, posing as a customs officer, told the woman that she had to pay the money in Indian currency to get her parcel.
The victim, not suspecting anything amiss, allegedly transferred money in the account number provided by the accused. After that she could no longer contact the man and realized that he had cheated her.
Subsequently, she filed a complaint with the police, who seized 19 mobile phones, 31 ATM cards, a laptop, 22 passbooks, 35 cheque books and a SIM card from the Nigerians.
