Bhubaneswar experienced a Zero Shadow Day at 11:43 am on Sunday when vertical objects appeared to cast no shadow. The phenomenon happened as the sun was at its zenith, for which the shadow was directly under the object.
People, including children, visited the Pathani Samanta Planetarium to witness the rare event.
Pathani Samanta Planetarium Deputy Director Subhendu Patnaik said that exactly when the sun appeared exactly overhead at 11:43 am, the shadow of any vertical object disappeared.
He informed that Cuttack city would witness the Zero Shadow Day on Monday (May 22) at 11.30 am.
The Zero Shadow Day occurs twice a year in a particular place, he said.
The Zero Shadow Day is experienced in regions located near the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. These regions experience the phenomenon because the sunrays are nearly perpendicular to the Earth’s surface. As a result, objects on the ground receive sunlight from directly above, causing their shadows to disappear.
