he Thinkers’ Club arranged a discussion over the ‘Zoom’ platform to assemble opinions about the necessity of reforms in the procedure of elections in the country . It was the 88th webinar of the club presided over by its president Barada Prasanna Das.
Former Chief Secretary of the State Sahadeb Sahoo was the chief guest of the meet. Professor Dr Surya Narayan Mishra was the guest of honour, while convener and ADR of Odisha Election Watch Ranjan Mohanty was the chief speaker. Convener of Odisha Bichar Manch Dr Harihar Kanungo was the chief analyst.
The dignitaries and intellectuals said that it is necessary to amend the existing obsolete provisions in the election process of the country.
Except for CEC TN Seshan, the rest of the commissioners were working as the puppets of the Government and the ruling party, they said.
It is unfortunate that, none of the political parties is taking interest to amend the election procedures. All are involved in grabbing power by any means, slammed former Chief Secretary Sahoo.
If the prevailing situation continues, the dissatisfied citizens will go for revolt and blood shedding cannot be avoided, warned Sahoo, insisting on the efficiency of the Election Commissioners. He demanded that competent persons be engaged as CEC.
Prof Mishra said that section 324 of the Constitution needs to be modified. At the same time, the mindset of the politicians and the voters need to be totally changed.
