The BJD’s slogan of respect to women is a hollow claim. During the party’s 23-year rule, women in Odisha have been tortured and ignored pathetically. The crimes against women in the State have become a major concern, said the State Mahila Congress on Monday.
In the Balangir district, a case of dowry torture has been lodged against a prominent BJD leader and his family members. A similar case has been lodged against the Kendrapada MLA at the Banki police station. A woman has alleged sexual abuse by an MLA of Jagatsinghpur district.
All this was pointed out by State Mahila Congress president Gitanjal Mohanty, who said that due to this one has to hang his head in shame. Is the law taking its own course and have the probes into these cases been completed in the stipulated timeframes, she questioned.
In terms of violence against women, Odisha occupies third position in the country, be it rape, gang-rape, domestic violence, she pointed out.
A Mahila Congress delegation on the day called on State Commission for Women Chairperson Minati Behera and submitted a memorandum in this connection.
