Traversing through the lanes of Purani Dilli, featuring Haksar Haveli in Sitaram Bazar, the ancestral home of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s mother Kamala Nehru, the inaugural day of the Delhi Nyay Yatra kicked off from Rajghat in the national Capital with palpable enthusiasm, rejigging the cadre that has lost its hold on Delhi since the party got wiped out in 2015 elections.
The first day of the yatra, that aims to restore its lost connect with the people of the Capital, saw presence of senior leaders including Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukvinder Singh Sukhu, Rajya Sabha MP and All India Congress Committee Treasurer Ajay Maken, AICC SC Morcha Incharge Rajesh Lilothia, former Northwest Delhi MP Udit raj, former Delhi Congress President and three time Kalkaji MLA Subhash Chopra and AICC SC Morcha incharge Rajesh Lilothia.
A big highlight of the yatra remained many supporters and party workers reminiscing Delhi under former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s tenure and wished to see Congress make a comeback in the Capital.
Yadav carried out a cleanliness drive at Chhath Ghat in ITO. "Delhi Nyay Yatra will reach all 70 Vidhan Sabha constituencies in the coming days and it has begun today from Rajghat. But before that, to wake up the sleeping government of Delhi, we have come to this Chhath Ghat in ITO and carried out a cleanliness drive as a token,” he said.
Taking a dig at Kejriwal’s AAP, former Delhi Congress president and MP Ajay Maken said that Kejriwal, who came to limelight by sporting a two-rupee pen, wearing hawai chappals, professing honesty and integrity, promising the implementation of the Lokpal Bill, buried his ideology under the carpet after tasting the fruits of power, and ended up living in a Rs 75 crore worth Sheesh Mahal, committed the liquor scam which sent him to jail.
Addressing the crowd at Rajghat, Sukhu said, "The Congress party is fighting for your rights. Nyay Yatra is being taken out to ensure employment, rights to the youth and respect for people of all religions. Nyay Yatra aims to ensure that labourers get their rights, farmers get their minimum support price and women get respect.”
A 42 year old Ram Charan Sharma said that the state has been destroyed by the rule of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. “Sheila Dixit did so much for Delhi in her tenure including building its infrastructure. How will those rule that are in jail?” he said.
60 year old Pramod shared similar sentiments stating that despite few improvements in the AAP government, the Congress tenure was more impactful for the people of Delhi.Congress loyalists, who have supported the party throughout, also made their way to yatra. An 80 year old man was seen sitting on the police barricade as he was waiting since 12 pm for the yatra to start. “For over five decades, I have always voted for Congress. I have come here to support Devendra Yadav in this journey and bring back the golden days of Congress,” he said. A 64 year old retired Chief petty officer (CPO) of the Navy Surendra Pahlwan asserted that if the people of Delhi want development, they should vote for Congress while if they want just 200 units of free electricity then they can choose AAP.
“Kejriwal has destroyed the Delhi that Congress created. We want to remind people through this yatra about the party and its work for the development of the city. People should vote for Congress if they want those days back,” he said.
On Rajghat, supporters saw a musical stand along with a band. Bottle shaped caricatures with ‘Bol rahi hai Bottle, Pol khol rahi hai bottle’ written on it and Kejriwal’s face painted on it also featured.
The yatra passed through the narrow lanes of Delhi Gate, Asaf Ali Road, Turkman Gate, Sitaram Bazar, Hauz Qazi Chowk, Katra Bariyan, and concluded at Fatehpuri.
To ensure maximum accessibility, the Congress has divided Delhi's seven Parliamentary constituencies by Assembly: 16 Assembly constituencies would be the focus of the first two stages, followed by 18 and 20 constituencies, respectively.
