Padma Vibhushan for MSY, SM Krishna, Zakir Hussain

Samajwadi Party founder late Mulayam Singh Yadav, former External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain are among the six people listed for this year’s Padma Vibhushan awards.

Others who will be  bestowed the highest civilian honor are: Balkishna Doshi from Gujarat (posthumously), Dilip Mahalanabis (posthumously) who worked in relief camps during the Bangladesh war and  US-based scientist and engineer Srinivas Varadhan.

No one has been named for the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award.

In the Padma Awards announced ahead of Republic Day 2023, President Droupadi Murmu  also listed out  nine names for  Padma Bhushan and 91 for Padma Shri Awards.

The nine Padma Bhushan awardees include:  Industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy’s wife and writer Sudha Murthy, Kannada writer SL Bhyrappa, and singer Vani Jayaram. Telangana’s spiritual gurus Swami Chinna Jeeyar Kamlesh D Patel and writer and educationist Kapil Kapoor from Delhi as well , and singer Suman Kalyapur from Maharashtra were also awarded Padma Bhushan.

As many as 91 people were given Padma Shri this time including stock market guru late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, musician Keeravaani, actress Raveen Tandon.  Delhi based physician Dr.Ishawar  Chandeer Vrma, Gurcharan Singh (sports) Dr.Nalini Parthasarathi (medicine) are also figured in the Padma Shri awardees list.

Among the Padma awarded 19 are women and two are from non-resident Indians and seven were awarded posthumously.  Sukama Acharya, Jodhaiyabai Baiga, Premijit Baria, Usha Barle, Hemant Chauhan, Bhanubhai Chitara, Hemoprova ChitiaSubhadra Devi, Hem Chandra Goswai, Pritikana Goswami Ahmed Hussai, Mohammed Hussai, Dilshad Hussain (all in art category) were awarded Padma Shri.

The Government has awarded Padma Shri to many unsung heroes working in social service. They are Ratan Chadra Kar, a doctor working with Jarwa tribes of Andamans Island; Hirabai Lobi, working for the welfare of Siddi Tribes; Dr.Munishwar Chander Dawar. working in Jabalpur for poor patients. Ramkuiwangle Newme. engaged in primary education from Nagaland , noted Gandhian Appukuttan Poduval from Kerala;,S Chandra Sekhar. working for uplift and child education of the poor in Andhra Pradesh; snake experts from Tamil Nadu Vadivel Gopal; and Masi Sadaiyan, Nrkram Sharma from organic farming..
