Sister Flavian, who served as the principal of Sacred Heart Convent School for the longest tenure of 12 years, now has a book based on her life. The famous educationalist, who not only took Scared Heart to new heights but also played instrumental role in setting up of Carmel Junior College, has a biography titled ‘The Smiling Nun’ set to be released on Saturday.
Penned by her former student, Swagata Dey the book captures her role in spreading education and his never dying spirit that brought change in lives of several of her students.
The project was started by her student Swagata Dey from Kolkata in 2016 when she joined hands together with people whose lives were touched by Sister Flavian. The book compiles work, life and attributes of her everyday life. She served as principal of Scared Heart Convent School from 1986 to 1998
“The project is a celebration of her tireless efforts known and unknown. We want to encapsulate and portray her identity to the world,” said Dey. Sister Flavian’s book will surely prove to be a great inspiration for the coming generation.
The book has been published by Creation Graphics, Kolkata and contains her lifelong eminent work portrayed along with captured glimpses , all accumulated together over the course of time.
Principal of Greenfiled School and former student of Scared Heart Convent School, Ekta Agarwal, said that Sister Flavian possesses inspiring personality. Her students too have penned thoughts on her in the book.
Born on June 5, 1936 in a family of three brothers and three sisters in an aristocratic family in Mangalore city in Karnataka, Flavie Dsouza ( Sister Flavian) was the fifth child. She was fond of all the little happiness and enjoyment life could bring though she longed to take up teaching as her profession.
After her schooling at the age of 19 she gave her luxurious life and decided to join the congregation of The Apostolic Carmel. Hence her long and eventful journey began from Sacred Heart School Jamshedpur. One by one she accomplished the goals she set for herself.
She headed many schools as the principal of Carmel School Patna, Carmel School Hazaribagh, Sacred heart Jamshedpur and Carmel School Buxar. She was the founder and Principal of Carmel Junior College in Sonari Jamshedpur. CJC was the youngest school which flourished during her tenure. She also took over Bal Vihar - a school for the hearing impaired while she was in Sonari Jamshedpur. Apart from the schools where she taught and where she headed she has a big contribution to many lives by building them up capable for doing jobs, educating, showing them the right path, bringing them to light from dark.
