Rashi Chakra dislayed on ‘Exhibit of the Week’ by IGRMS

Under the latest and popular online series of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya entitled ‘Exhibit of the Week’, the Rashi Chakra,Bell metal image of a peacock with Zodiac signs  traditional bell metal image, crafted by the Dokra community of Bankura, west Bengal, was displayed on Monday.

This is the third  exhibit of the month of September, 2020 through official website, Facebook,  Instagram and twitter page of the IGRMS.

In this regard Praveen Kumar Mishra, Director, IGRMS said that, Rashi Chakra is a traditional bell metal image, crafted by the Dokra community of Bankura, west Bengal.

 It is a single moulded image of stylized Peacock standing on a circular raised platform holding a five hooded Snake in his mouth.

It has decorative wings with elaborated feather fashioned in such a manner that each eyeball of the feather depicts different signs of the zodiac symbols like Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. It combines astrology as a sign of good fortune and is used for auspicious and decorative purpose.

The present object exhibited is a Rashi chakra which is crafted by a community known as Karmakar using lost wax technique.
