Jamshedpur has been declared ‘Best Medium City’ in the country in the Swachh Survekshan (SS) Awards 2020 that were announced at New Delhi on Thursday.
Minister of State, Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep S Puri announced the Swachh Survekshan (SS) Awards 2020 at a ceremony in New Delhi through a virtual platform. The city won the accolade under the category of first ‘Best Medium City in Citizens feedback’ in India
Under SS- League (Quarterly assessment), Jamshedpur ranked as first under the category of 1-10 lakhs population consecutively for two quarters.
Moreover, under garbage free city assessment that is Star Rating, Jamshedpur city emerged as 3 star rating city which is a subset of Swachh Survekshan. Jamshedpur achieved 13th position where 4242 cities and 62 cantonment zones participated.
The city scored 5133 out of 6000. For the first time, Jamshedpur was conferred with the 7th Position under National level 1-10 lakh category population and ranked first in the state of Jharkhand for the second time in a row. Meanwhile, Indore has been declared cleanest city in India consecutively for the fourth time with the score of 5647 / 6000. Surat stood second and Navi Mumbai third respectively. The few parameters of Swachh Survekshan – 2020 were: Source Segregation of Waste, Door to Door Garbage collection, Social Entrepreneur Model where waste pickers were integrated in value chain thus providing employment to them, Dry Waste Collection centers set up at 5 strategic locations,
Wet Waste processing facility to convert it into organic manure(Compost), Decentralised processing units like modular biogas (>100Kgs) -16 locations and Organic waste converter installations at flat complexes, Capping of dumpsites at XLRI and Bara, City beautification initiatives like theme based wall paintings, and Zero Liquid discharge.
An official of Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited (formerly JUSCO) that looks after civic services in the city, said that public participation was clearly visible as 48611 feedbacks were registered this year during assessment and this is where Jamshedpur city received under the category of first ‘Best Medium City in Citizens feedback’ in India.
“We are certain that in times to come, with the support of all, Jamshedpur will prove to accomplish a higher rating and will be a guiding light to many other cities,” he noted.
In the year 2017, Jamshedpur was in 64th position and received an award as the cleanest city in the Eastern Zone, under the category (>10 Lakh Population) in this survey 434 Cities participated.
In the year 2018, Jamshedpur achieved 30th Position where 4203 cities participated. In the year 2019, the city achieved, 15th Position, where 4237 cities participated.
