Heavy rain played havoc for the second consecutive day that resulted in waterlogging and heavy traffic snarls at several places across the city.

According to the IMD, in the last 48 hours, Gurugram received 158 mm of rain which caused water-logging and flood like situation on multiple stretches and areas in the city. Both vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement have been disrupted due to waterlogging on several major and connecting roads in the city.

According to the data released by the local administration, the Gurugram city on Thursday recorded a rainfall of 158 mm, Pataudi 129 mm, Sohna 104 mm, Farukhnagar 76 mm, Manesar 127 mm and Wazirabad 128 mm.

Apart from this, a five-story under construction building located in Sector-46 in Gurugram was vacated on Thursday after it bent on one side due to heavy rain in the region. The area where the building was situated was severely flooded. The roads were also waterlogged.

“Water has filled up in the basement since Wednesday morning. We are helpless since it is raining and can’t drain the water out,” said Rajesh Kumar, owner of the property.

The neighbours however claimed that the building owner illegally constructed the fifth floor while the MCG allows construction only upto the fourth floor.

In another incident, a part of the road caved in near IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram on Thursday morning, following heavy rainfall. The area has been cordoned off.

The city was submerged in an average of 3 feet of water with the worst hit areas being Delhi-Gurugram expressway, Jharsa Chowk, IffCO Chowk, Sohna Road, Narsinghpur, Basai Chowk, Sohna Chowk, Sector 4-7, Hanuman Chowk, Bilaspur Chowk, Fazilpur Chowk, Vatika Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Baghtawar Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, Dundahera and Jawala Mill.

Morning rush hour traffic was affected and the police struggled to keep the vehicles moving. The policemen were seen standing in knee-deep water while struggling to keep traffic going. People also took to twitter to share pictures and videos of their rainy experiences. Being a working day, the continuous rain created problems for two-wheeler riders, with many waiting under flyovers to escape the downpour. Meanwhile, Gurugram Police on its official Twitter handle also alerted the commuters about the heavy

traffic and water-logging in several areas.

It said, “Water-logging has been reported at South city-2 on Sohna road, Signature Tower, Narsinghpur Chowk on NH-48.”

“Our traffic officials are on the spot to facilitate the traffic flow. Commuters are requested to plan their travel accordingly.”

Waterlogging was also reported from areas like the Old Delhi road in front of Maruti Gate-1, Unitech Cyber Park, Sector 4 and 5 roundabouts, Jawala Mill Road and Golf Course Road in Gurugram.

The Gurugram Traffic Police also appealed to the people to come out of their homes only if it was necessary. “Due to consistent rain since Wednesday water-logging has been reported at several places and the traffic is moving at a very slow pace. It is a request to everyone to come out if it is necessary. Inconvenience is regretted,” it said in a tweet.

On Wednesday, visuals of traffic jams, submerged roads and underpasses and a boat moving on a water-logged road emerged from Gurugram. The city was crippled due to the rain for the last two days as many subways were inundated by the water.

“Heavy rain disrupt traffic movements in Gurugram, the MCG on their task to flush out rain water in the drainage with the help of pumps, fire tenders and other machinery. The civic body officials have been deployed at the waterlogged spot to take a stock of the drainage situation in the city,” said Vinay Pratap Singh, Commissioner MCG.
