19 killed as bus plunges onto frozen river

Moscow: A passenger bus plunged off a bridge onto a frozen river in Siberia on Sunday, killing 19 of the more than 40 people on board, authorities said. A tyre on the bus burst as it was crossing the bridge over the Kuenga river in eastern Siberia’s Zabaikalsky region.

Toll at least 21 after Mexico cartel attack

Mexico City: Mexican security forces on Sunday killed seven more members of a presumed cartel assault force that rolled into a town near the Texas border and staged an hour-long attack, officials said, bringing the death toll to at least 21.

Turkey dispute: Greece for NATO’s support

Athens: Greece’s Prime Minister said Sunday he will ask other NATO members at the alliance’s London summit to support Greece in the face of fellow member Turkey’s attempts to encroach on Greek sovereignty, notably last week’s agreement with Libya delineating maritime borders in the Mediterranean.

Bus accident kills 22 in northern Tunisia

Tunis: A bus carrying Tunisian tourists crashed in mountains in the country’s north on Sunday, killing 22 people and injuring 21, the interior ministry said. The bus was travelling through the Ain Snoussi region when it plunged over a cliff, the ministry said.

11 wounded in New Orleans shooting

Washington: Eleven people were wounded in a shooting early on Sunday in New Orleans’ French Quarter, a popular tourist hub, US police said, adding that two of the victims were in a critical condition. The shooting took place at about 3:00 am on a crowded commercial street near many hotels in a historic district that attracts visitors from around the world.

Plane crash kills 9, injures 3 in S Dakota

Washington: A plane crash in the US state of South Dakota killed nine people, including two children, and injured three others while a winter storm warning was in place, officials said.

Namibia President Geingob wins 2nd term

Windhoek: Namibia’s incumbent President Hage Geingob has won a second term, securing 56.3 per cent of the vote in the presidential election, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) said. Geingob on Saturday defeated independent candidate Panduleni Itula, who received 29.4 per cent, Xinhua news agency reported, citing ECN.
