Nigerian who used woman identity on FB held for duping netizens

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested a 35-year-old Nigerian for allegedly duping several people over social media. The accused had created several fake IDs with fake girl names on Facebook and through those he used to dupe Indian man in order to earn easy money by illegal means.

The accused has been identified as Ogbodo Ifeanyi Henrey presently living at Devli Khanpur in Delhi and a permanent resident of Enugu City, 11 Kings Street in Nigeria. Police have also recovered 16 mobile handsets, 21 SIM cards, two laptops, two internet routers and five debit cards with the name of other persons from his possession.

According to Dr Ajit Kumar Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, a complaint was received in which complainant said that a woman with name Holly David who claimed to be resident of UK became his Facebook friend in January 2017.

“Both were in constant touch through social media networking like Facebook messenger and later on Whatsapp and email. The woman told him that she would come to India on February 6 by British Airways. On 06 February the complainant received call wherein the caller disguised or posed himself as Custom Officer from Mumbai and told him that Holly David is at Mumbai Airport and she has to pay Rs 55,000 as custom clearance to travel in India,” said Additional CP.

“The complainant transferred Rs 5.90 Lakh from his bank account to the bank account of alleged persons in three installments in the name of Custom clearance and Anti Terrorist Certificate. After that the alleged persons demanded more money, but the complainant refused to pay and contacted police,” said Additional CP.

“A First Information Report (FIR) was registered and investigation was initiated. During investigation, email and call records were scanned which led to the arrest of the accused,” said Additional CP.

“During interrogation,

the accused confessed to his crimes and revealed that he came to India on business visa in 2013. But in order to earn quick money he created

several facebook profiles with fake girls names and have duped several people in country,” said the Additional CP adding that further investigation is going on.
