Mahavir Ram, the revered founder of the suicide prevention organization Jeevan, passed away on Thursday night, leaving the city and countless lives he touched in mourning. He was 86 years old. Ram was admitted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) on Wednesday following a decline in his health. Despite intensive care in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and treatment for pneumonia, his condition worsened, and he passed away at 9 PM.
Ram was not only the founder of Jeevan, a pioneering organization committed to suicide prevention and mental health awareness, but also a dedicated member of various other organizations. He was associated with Rajasthan Maitri Sangh, ASIA, and Laghu Udyog Bharati, where he worked tirelessly for the community. Through Jeevan, he championed mental health advocacy, reaching out to those in crisis and providing them with support and hope.
Ram's academic and professional journey was equally illustrious. He completed his engineering from BIT Sindri and went on to earn a PhD from the prestigious University of Sheffield, where he was also a gold medalist. His career in academia saw him serve as the Head of Department and Principal of the Metallurgy Department at NIT (formerly RIT), Adityapur. His contributions to the field of metallurgy and his dedication to nurturing young minds have left an indelible mark on the institution.
Ram is survived by his son, Deepak Dokania, two daughters, and two grandsons. Known for his humility and warmth, he was deeply loved and respected by his family, colleagues, and the wider community. His death has created a void that will be hard to fill.
Jeevan, the organization he founded, has been at the forefront of suicide prevention in Jamshedpur and beyond. Under his guidance, Jeevan provided counseling and support to countless individuals in their darkest moments, saving lives and fostering mental well-being. His vision and commitment have inspired many to join the cause, ensuring that his legacy of compassion continues.
Ram’s last rites were performed today. The funeral procession started from his residence in CH Area at 11:30 AM and proceeded to Parvati Ghat. Family, friends, and well-wishers gathered to pay their final respects to a man who dedicated his life to the service of others.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the city and beyond. Members of Jeevan, Rajasthan Maitri Sangh, and other organizations he was associated with remembered him as a visionary leader and a compassionate human being. “Mahavir Ram’s contributions to the community and his relentless efforts to save lives will be remembered forever. He was a beacon of hope for many,” said a spokesperson from Jeevan.
He said that Jamshedpur has lost one of its most dedicated and compassionate leaders. Mahavir Ram’s life was a testament to the power of service and empathy, and his contributions will continue to inspire generations.
