Dr Jeyarani Kamaraj, a leading gynaecologist in Tamil Nadu has become the first Indian woman doctor to be elevated as an advisory committee member of the World Association of Sexual Health (WAS), a consultant body to World Health Organisation. Dr Jeyarani was elected to the high power body in the general council meeting of the WAS held recently at Prague, the capital city of Czech Republic.
The honour comes along with the revised moto of WAS which states that “sexual
wellbeing is a human right”. Dr Jeyarani joins a select group of medical doctors from all
over the globe working for sexual health throughout the world by developing and supporting sexology and sexual rights for all.
“Though there were names of eight women doctors in the panel, Dr Jeyarani’s professional qualifications, her research papers and achievements in her area of specialisation made the world body to pick her up for the prestigious post,” said a WAS member.
“WAS has declared Human Rights and Sexual Health as its theme and we will be working in this direction,” said Dr Jeyarani. She also announced the launching of E-Alert, a news magazine to help women facing sexual problems and issues.
Chennai is hosting FERTICON-2017, a two-day seminar on fertility and high risk pregnancy for the benefit of medical doctors working in the area. Doctors and scientists working in the field of IVF would share their experiences and findings with Indian specialists during the seminar, said Dr Jeyarani.
“We are engaged in spreading the concept of IVF, a costly exercise as on today. Our immediate mission is to make this process available and affordable to all sections of the society. Doctors at the Primary Health Centres across the country should be able to perform the IVF like any other kind of treatment,” said Dr Jeyarani.
