The millennium city will soon get its second Government girl's college as the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has received a communiqué in this regard from the State Government. HUDA has started looking for the land for the construction of girls' college. Once the site is finalised, the proposal would be sent to the State Government for the financial grant, said an official.
According to sources, HUDA has identified land in sectors 44, 58 and 68 and around 15-acre land has been lying vacant in one of the sectors as there is no alternate land available in the other sectors in Gurugram.
"If the urban development body's proposal is approved by the State Government, then it will be a big relief for the girls' student in the district," a senior official with the department requesting anonymity, said.
There is only one girl's government college in Gurugram with a population of over 25 lakhs. At present, the existing college at sector -14 can't admit more than 7,400 girls.
Apart from Gurugram, hundreds of girl students come from the outskirts such as Pataudi, Sohna, Farukhnagar, Manesar and Bilaspur and it's quite difficult to travel from a long distance especially for girl students, said the district official.
"Once the proposal is finalised, the department will soon start construction work on the site," the official said. It may be noted that girl students in Gurugram have long been requesting for a college in rural areas also as they have to travel for more than 25 to 30 kilometres to reach the city college for higher studies.
"It is really a good step taken by the State Government to increase options for higher studies for girls. Sector-14 college has limited seats so the second options will definitely increase the number of seats in the college and we will be saved from commuting to Delhi University for further studies," Nidhi Mehta, a college student.
"As per an estimate, more than 65,000 girl students from the city travel to the national capital and adjoining states for higher studies. Currently, Gurugram has three Government colleges and al are situated in the city, wherein about 19,000 students study. There is an urgent need for the second college for the girls in the city", the official added.
