'A no-message all-fun film'

Talktime | Krishnadev Yagnik

Days Of Tafree are here and SHAlINI SAKSENA goes for a spin with director Krishnadev Yagnik

What is the movie aboutIJ

It is a simple story of college students and their one-year journey on campus. Nothing is over dramatised. People will be able to identify with the film as we have shown what each one of us has experienced in college, the language we used, the way we behaved with each other or interacted with professors.

Is it a dramaIJ

No, it’s a comedy. It is about how there is one friend who keeps irritating others but when he is not around he is missed. After he has an accident, the lives of all his friends change. Usually, students don’t have a career path in college. But this incident makes them rethink.

Why is it that most youth-based movies don’t do well at the box officeIJ

I don’t think that this is true. See how well the regional film Chhello Divas did in Gujarat that was made by me. Days of Tafree is a remake of this film. And Chhello… ran for 200 days even when movies like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo couldn’t. The week we released Chhello…, Spectre also released. Yet, for four weeks, my film ran house full. It got a lot of appreciation and that is why we decided to make a Hindi remake.

Would you agree that people don’t like to watch such filmsIJ

No. I find that the youth prefer to watch movies that find a connect with them. I mean, if a hero gives a punch and the villain flies 20 feet away, that is not realistic. Young people want to see thing are real. My friend was waiting for a person and that person kept telling him for a long time that he was just 10 minutes away. I have used an incident in the movie that happened with a friend. But when my friend called this person on his landline number he picked up the phone himself. This is something that happens in everyone’s life. The minute people will see it, they will find it funny and identify with it.

Is there a message in the movieIJ

Usually movies come with a message but here we have tried to keep away from it. We just want people to enjoy the film. There is no motto or even a subtle message.

nWhere are we going wrong while making comediesIJ

Most filmmakers make a compromise when budget comes into play. They tend to cut corners and the script suffers. But if three-four people are involved, you will get a good storyline. And that is what I am trying to do – make good comedy.

The reason why we insist on making slapstick comedy.

Well, slapstick comedies will not be made if people didn't like them.

Have you started working on another projectIJ

For now, I had been busy with Days Of Tafree. I will now start thinking on other projects and look for a good comedy script. This is because I like this genre and continue to make people laugh.
