The June 2013 disaster may have proven detrimental to tourism in different parts of the State but the Dhanaulti Eco Park near Mussoorie has seen a rise in its income from tourist arrivals this year. Though the private hoteliers in this area are yet to see a boom in business, the eco-park has registered a record Rs37 lakh plus income from tourists this year.
Following the disaster in Kedarnath last year, the number of visitors to the Char Dham shrines has dwindled drastically. However, Dhanaulti has managed to attract a considerable number of tourists this year. Dhanaulti presents a picture of peace compared to the crowd and hustle bustle of nearby Mussoorie. The natural beauty and peace of Dhanaulti is much appreciated by visitors. The area is cloaked in jungles of Deodar and Kuner trees that create a special ambience in Dhanaulti. The cool mountain breeze, woods and peace make it an ideal location for tourists looking to spend time in the rejuvenating lap of nature.
According to official data, a total of 1,02,879 tourists visited the Dhanaulti Eco Park in 2013 which generated a revenue of Rs31,54,982. In 2014 so far, a total of 1,12,140 tourists have visited the eco-park generating a revenue of Rs37,63,477. Interestingly, though tourists from various parts of India and abroad visited the eco-park, they apparently showed little interest in securing local boarding and lodging overnight. The tourists generally visit this place and then leave for Dehradun or some other destination. Due to this reason, the local hotel owners have not benefited though the tourist flow has generated increased revenue for the eco-park.
MS Kathait, who is involved in the hospitality sector here states that the business is mostly average throughout the year. The local businesses could have earned more if the tourists stayed here overnight. He blamed the State Government for not effectively publicising the safe tourist destinations due to which the local hospitality industry is not making the expected profits. Though advance bookings are open for those wanting to celebrate the advent of the New Year here, but the rooms in some hotels here have not yet been booked.
