Harried commuters will soon have an easy ride on Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg flyover with the construction of a parallel flyover. The Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC), set up by the Urban Development Ministry to take care of city aesthetics, on Tuesday gave clearance to the new flyover to facilitate traffic from IIT Delhi to Airport.
The DUAC has also sanctioned design for construction of an underpass on Benito Juarez Marg for traffic turning right towards Moti Bagh.
After deliberation, a proposal was mooted to build a parallel three-lane flyover to the existing flyover to decongest various arterial roads in south Delhi. “It was proposed to construct a three-lane flyover parallel to the existing one-way RTR flyover to ease traffic from IIT-D to Airport. The projected flyover will originate from the elevated carriageway of Munirka flyover. It will be constructed on stilts over the existing carriageway so that traffic at ground level is not unsettled. The proposal to construct a parallel flyover was green-lighted by the lieutenant Governor in April. The DUAC nod is a big leap towards initiation of construction work on the flyover,” said PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.
The 2.2 km length of the flyover will run parallel to the existing flyover on RTR Marg and terminate near Niryat Bhawan. According to the Public Works Department (PWD), the estimated cost of the project would be in the region of `125 crore. Construction work on the flyover is expected to take two years. The portal structure of the impending flyover will ensure traffic movement under the flyover continues unabated. “Traffic from the dual carriageway of Munirka flyover can continue on the elevated stretch and take the upcoming flyover constructed as an arm to the existing flyover to reach Airport. It will be a three-lane flyover with dual carriageways for traffic moving at grade. The descent of the proposed flyover is staggered from the ascent of the existing. Provision of two lanes (7.5 m) under the portals is kept for traffic to access colonies adjoining outer Ring Road and turning right on RTR,” said a PWD official.
