Cabinet nod to flyover, underpass to relieve RTR Marg

In a bid to decongest Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg near Vasant Vihar, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved construction of a three-lane flyover on portal structure between Munirka flyover and Army RR Hospital on Outer Ring Road and an underpass at Benito Juarez Marg (BJ) junction on Inner Ring Road.

The flyover is expected to decongest the stretch from IIT to IGI Airport. It will commence from the existing Munirka flyover and run parallel to RTR flyover before descending near Niryat Bhawan. The length of the flyover will be over 3 km and its estimated cost of construction will be around Rs 211 crore, while that of BJ Marg underpass will be Rs 102.42 crore (including construction of a skywalk).

After the Cabinet meeting, PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the flyover would improve East-West connectivity to IGI Airport, Dwarka, Gurgaon as well as NH-8. Further, the Cabinet approved the construction of an underpass for right turn from Benito Juarez Marg junction to Inner Ring Road along with a skywalk at an estimated cost of Rs 102.42 crore. This will ease traffic on Outer Ring Road and improve connectivity to Central and North Delhi from the South.

The Cabinet gave its final financial approval; hence, there would be no change in the scope of work and cost. The site of the underpass project at BJ Marg junction is on an average 4 km away from the flyover project site. The Delhi Metro has also agreed to construct a portion of the underpass coming directly below the viaduct of its under-construction Phase III project on Ring Road.

The Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) cleared the flyover project on August 27 this year. To decongest RTR Marg and Dhaula Kuan, traffic from the Airport will be diverted to BJ Marg, which was not utilised earlier since there was no right turn for Moti Bagh and New Delhi.
