Wanted criminal fires at Delhi Police team on Yamuna Expressway, held

29-year-old wanted criminal allegedly snatched a service pistol from a Delhi Police head constable and opened fire at a sub-inspector while being taken to the national capital from West Bengal, prompting police to retaliate and injure him in the leg, officials said Wednesday, August 12.

The incident occurred late Tuesday, August 11, night on the Yamuna Expressway in the Naujheel police station area of Mathura district.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mant) Amarnath Yadav said a special team from Delhi Police's Jahangirpuri police station had arrested Wasim Akram, alias Lambu, from Nandigram in West Bengal in connection with a murder case and was bringing him to Delhi.

Around midnight, Akram allegedly got down from the vehicle near the expressway on the pretext of urinating and snatched the 9mm service pistol of head constable Harish before attempting to flee. When police personnel gave chase, he allegedly opened fire at them, hitting Sub-Inspector Ajay Kumar in the arm. Police retaliated, hitting Akram in the leg, after which he fell and was apprehended.

Both the injured sub-inspector and the accused were taken to a community health centre and later referred to the district hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

Police recovered the service pistol, along with its magazine and all cartridges, from the accused. A case has been registered against Akram under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, police said.
