Vijay wins Tamil Nadu floor test with 144 votes as 25 AIADMK MLAs back him

Actor-turned-politician Vijay secured a crucial victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after winning the floor test with the support of 144 legislators, officially confirming his position as the state’s new Chief Minister.
The confidence vote witnessed 22 members voting against the motion, while five legislators remained neutral during the proceedings. The development comes weeks after Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged victorious in the recently concluded Assembly elections, reshaping the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
The floor test also exposed visible cracks within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam camp. Despite party leadership directing members to abstain from the vote, 25 AIADMK MLAs reportedly voted in favour of Vijay’s government, signalling growing internal dissent within the party.
Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a walkout during the voting process with its 59 MLAs, intensifying the political drama inside the Assembly.
Speaking after the victory, Vijay said the mandate marked a historic moment for his party and assured that his government would work to protect the rights of minorities and all sections of society.
Political observers believe the support from a section of AIADMK legislators could significantly alter alliance equations in Tamil Nadu politics in the coming months.
