Trump halts Strait of Hormuz operation amid Iran deal progress Middle East crisis deepens

US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused the US military’s “Project Freedom” operation aimed at securing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, citing progress in negotiations with Iran.
Trump said the operation would be halted for a short period to assess whether a “complete and final agreement” can be reached with Iranian representatives. The move comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global oil transit route.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded by criticising the US approach, stating that Washington continues to pursue a policy of “maximum pressure” while expecting Tehran to accept unilateral demands — something he described as unacceptable.
Meanwhile, the broader regional situation remains volatile. Reports indicate Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, with multiple arrests including women and children. Separately, a vessel operated by French shipping giant CMA CGM was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in injuries to crew members and damage to the ship.
The ongoing tensions are also impacting global industries. German airline Lufthansa has warned of financial risks due to rising fuel prices linked to disruptions in oil supply routes.
With diplomatic efforts ongoing and military operations paused, global attention remains focused on whether a breakthrough agreement between the US and Iran can stabilise the region.
